TRAINING

Training packages we offer

Our most popular training package is our one day Deaf and BSL Awareness. We can also offer these as separate training sessions. Your organisation may want a session of Deaf Awareness, then BSL Awareness and then BSL classes for your staff to learn how to use British Sign Language in the context of their job. We understand that a standard curriculum may not suit everyone’s needs. That’s why many of our training packages are tailored specifically to your requirements. Read on for more detail.

Available as 2 hour session, half day session, or a full training day

Our Deaf Awareness training is a useful session for participants looking to understand more about the language and cultural differences of the different groups of people who experience deafness. You will have the opportunity to practice communication techniques, and understand the limitations of lip reading as a skill. You will learn about the different equipment and technology that is used for the different types of deafness, appropriate terminology to use, and about British Sign Language, the preferred language of the Deaf Community.

By the end of the session you will:

  • Be able to engage in a positive interaction with a deaf person
  • Understand the differences between the terms Deaf, Deafblind, Deafened and Hard of Hearing
  • Be confident in facilitating effective communication

The content of the training can be adjusted to suit your needs. We can include sessions on providing reasonable adjustments for deaf employees, or how to provide excellent customer service to deaf customers or service users. If your frontline staff will be the first point of contact for deaf customers, we will focus the training on ensuring they feel confident and prepared for their work by the end of the session. We can deliver the session in your own venue, or we have our own training suite in Glasgow City Centre.

Available as 2 hour session, half day session, or a full training day
This training session involves a mixture of presentation, discussion and activities to teach people about British Sign Language, the preferred language of the Deaf community in Scotland. Participants will learn about the history of BSL, understand the differences between BSL and English and how BSL relates to Makaton and ‘baby sign’. We will cover the relevant legislation as it applies in Scotland, and how you can ensure you are exercising best practice in your interactions with BSL users. By understanding BSL as a visual language and what we mean by ‘Deaf culture’, you will have a greater awareness of BSL and the needs of BSL users. This training also includes some basic BSL phrases, meaning you will be able to introduce yourself in BSL and recognise when others are using BSL to communicate.

By the end of the session you will:

  • Understand the history of BSL and the development of the language
  • Understand the difference between English and British Sign Language
  • Be aware of the medical view of deafness and the impact on Deaf childrens’ language acquisition
  • Be able to fingerspell the alphabet and know some basic BSL phrases
  • Recognise the legal status of BSL as a minority language in Scotland
  • Be aware of best practice when booking interpreters or commissioning translations for BSL users

The content of the training can also be adjusted to suit your needs. We can include sessions on providing reasonable adjustments for employees who are BSL users, or how to provide excellent customer service to customers or service users who use BSL. If your frontline staff will be the first point of contact for deaf customers, we will focus the training on ensuring they feel confident and prepared for their work by the end of the session. We can deliver the session in your own venue, or we have our own training suite in Glasgow City Centre.
To follow on from this session, we can also provide bespoke BSL training courses for your organisation to become more fluent in their use of BSL.
